The Raw Deal
by DCDave

What is our entitlement from living in this land?
It's surely not a patronizing governmental hand.
We're not owed a poultry pot or cars beneath a roof,
But from our chosen leaders we're entitled to the truth.

Public servants ought to know they're there by our consent,
It's what our founding fathers said because it's what they meant.
Openness and candor are a basic obligation
Of every high official in a democratic nation.

That their dealing with us should be always fair and forthright
Is something that we're confident is nothing but our birthright,
But when they sell us fables that assume low mental wattage,
We've traded in our birthright for a sorry mess of pottage.
